2016 - 2017 Modified School Calendar

----------------------------------------------------

Pope Francis has declared 2016 a"Holy Year of Mercy" as a way for the Catholic Church to"make more evident its mission to be a witness of mercy."

Pope Francis continually reminds us in word and action that, in imitation of Jesus, we are called to service in our work in Catholic education.

==================================================

METROPOLITAN ANDREY SHEPTETSKY

This year, our school will honour and pray for Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. His great leadership and determination helped to renew the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was a true pastor to his people. God grant him eternal rest.

Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky is a man to be honored and emulated. He dedicated his life to God, to the Church and to the Ukrainian culture and heritage. He showed his great love for the Ukrainian people (and people of all nationalities as well) especially the students and the young people. His deeds should inspire our lives. By following his example we can dedicate our lives to God’s laws and His love.

After learning the ways in which Metropolitan Andrey lived his life fully and wisely, we, too, can make wiser choices to give meaning to our lives and to live our lives fully. To help us make wiser choices Metropolitan Andrey wrote a prayer about the Holy Wisdom of God. We have to remember that Holy Wisdom is also called Saint Sofia. And the Holy Wisdom of God has a special meaning for us today in this school.

Pupil Accommodation Review Policy Public Consultation

The Ministry of Education released the new Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline (PARG) in March 2015. This guideline sets expectations for all school boards on managing and reviewing underutilized school space, including potential school closures, and for the greater coordination and sharing of planning related information between school boards and other community partners.

The guideline requires all school boards in the province to develop or revise Pupil Accommodation Review Policies and to invite public input into the policy before it is finalized.

A survey to collect feedback on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board’s draft amended Policy 6.51 Pupil Accommodation Review will be available for review and comment on the Board’s website at www.dpcdsb.orguntil 4:30 pm on Friday, October 16, 2015.  Supporting documents will also be available for reference and review. Please consider reviewing and providing input on this policy.

STUDENT INSURANCE

As required by the EDUCATION ACT and the Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about cost-effective student accident insurance coverage via student carrier "Insuremykids Pro-tection Plan." Forms were distributed to students the first week of school.

It is imperative that parents/guardians return the completed "Student Accident Insurance Acknowledgement 2015/2016 School Year" form to the respective classroom teacher.

Effective September 2012, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires parents/guardians written acknowledgement that they have received information regarding Student Insurance, especially for those students participating in out-of-school excursions and/or extra-curricular sports activities. Although enrolment is voluntary, the board encourages parents to take advantage of the excursions/field trips, or, if parents do not have dental insurance coverage.

Two options are offered for enrolment:

1) Complete the traditional form and mail it in

OR

2) Photocopy the form and fax it to Reliable Life at 1-905-522-7211 or 1-800-463-KIDS (5437). Parents alone have the right to insure their children.

Please note that the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board DOES NOT provide insurance for students against any accidental death, disability, dismemberment, or medical expenses that might occur as a result of accident during school activities, including sports events and field trips.

WE ARE AN ALLERGEN AWARE SCHOOL!

As we begin a new school year, we would like to inform you that St. Sofia School is an ‘allergen aware school.’   There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life-threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products and/or milk products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life-threatening reactions.

In order to respect the caution required for bringing food into the school, as parents you are asked to use alternate methods to recognize your child’s birthday. This could be in the form of a book donated to our school library or class library in your child’s name.

Other alternatives can also include pencils and stickers.

Donuts from Tim Horton’s, or any other products that are NOT Nut Free, will no longer be permitted as a treat in class.Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

STORAGE & ADMINISTRATION of MEDICATION

Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are updated annually for any student who requires medication to be administered at school. If your child requires medication please have the necessary forms completed and return them, along with any medication, to the office as soon as possible.

CUSTODY OF CHILDREN

On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult situations in which non-custodial parents arrive at school asking to visit their child or to take their child home after school. We are best able to serve and protect students when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your family, please ensure that our office staff and classroom teachers are aware of any custodial arrangements that may affect your child during school hours.

CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS

Any school volunteers who come into regular contact with students will be required to produce a CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECK and ANNUAL DEFENCE DECLARATION.

A Criminal Reference Check is to be submitted to the Principal prior to being accepted as a volunteer in the school (e.g. to help supervise students on a field trip).  Volunteers who have previously submitted CRC's will be required to submit an annual Criminal Offence Declaration.  Forms should be submitted to the Principal who will house them in a secure location, with the utmost respect to the confidential nature of the material.

Copies of these forms are available in the office.

BUSING

Any questions or concerns regarding the transportation of your child should be directed to STOPR, the bus company, or Student Transportation at 905-890-6000.  This includes lateness or missed stops.  You will need to provide your child's OEN number to verify your identity when contacting STOPR or Student Transportation.  Please keep this information near your phone for quick reference.  Your child's OEN number can be found on their report card.

St. Sofia Pastoral Plan 2015-2016

This month, we will celebrate the virtue of FAITH

God created us to live together as a family rooted in Christ.

A Faithful Person...

  • knows that we are all part of God's family
  • wants to be good like Jesus
  • prays regularly and from the heart
  • knows there is good in everyone
  • sees good in the world
  • uses and respects other people's right names
  • is confident that God loves us all
  • believes that God loves us no matter what
  • learns from Bible stories
  • learns from the family of the Catholic Church

Jesus spent a major part of his time on earth showing us about the preferential option for the poor and weak.  He spent an extraordinary amount of time showing how to follow God's rules, the rules of the kingdom.  The sick, the lame, the blind, the bad sinners all need a fair chance to succeed -- to overcome their disadvantages and disabilities in order to succeed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pope Francis has declared 2016 a"Holy Year of Mercy" as a way for the Catholic Church to"make more evident its mission to be a witness of mercy."

Pope Francis continually reminds us in word and action that, in imitation of Jesus, we are called to service in our work in Catholic education.

-------------------------------------------------

Metropolitan Andrey Sheptetsky

This year our school will honour and pray for Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. His great leadership and determination helped to renew the Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was a true pastor to his people. God grant him eternal rest.

“ ALL DUFFERIN –PEEL BUSES are CANCELLED”.

If transportation is cancelled in the morning there will be no transportation in the afternoon – even if weather conditions improve.

Sometimes parents struggle to get their children to the school when buses are cancelled only to be faced with the impossible task of getting the children home if conditions get worse during the day. Children who are not at school due to bus cancellations are not considered absent on the attendance register.

If you hear: "The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board buses and the Peel District School Board buses in THE TOWN OF CALEDON are cancelled."

This means BUS 10 and BUS 16 are cancelled only.
